Seed sowing in the sunshine

The first couple of days of Covid lockdown the weather was superb. Like many people I spent a lovely few days catching up on some jobs in the garden. I’d been trying to get chance to get my first few seeds set for a couple of weeks but had been working flat out pre lockdown to leave work as organised as possible.

I’d had a quick dash to B&Q to grab some seeds a couple of days before Boris made it official that we were staying home. I usually get most of my seeds from Thompson & Morgan mail order but wasn’t sure how that would work in these circumstances. Luckily B&Q had most of what I wanted and in the varieties I’m familiar with. One visit and I had most of my seeds along with some seed and cutting compost and some hormone rooting gel for cuttings. Phew, if I’m to be at home for a while at least I can get the garden sorted.

Having had a couple of years out of the smallholding it took me a while to find where I’d left everything. After rooting around in the greenhouse for a while however I found a windowsill propagator, some seed trays and a bag of vermiculite.

I then spent a lovely hour or so in the sun planting the seeds i need to start indoors. Two varieties of tomato, a cherry and a standard, asparagus, chilli’s, aubergine and celery were set in the heated propagator. That is now sat on my kitchen window sill and I’m expecting to see the first signs of germination within a day or two. I also set some courgettes in multi pots that are also indoors but without heat.

A cracking afternoon well spent. I could easily get used to not working!
