The snow over the last few days has caused a flurry of activity around our bird feeders.
With a thick covering of snow on the ground I suppose most of the food sources that our local bird life relies on will be either buried or frozen solid. This has meant our bird feeders are a hive of activity with birds queuing up in the branches of the apple tree and Bruce the Spruce awaiting their turn to fill their bellies.
We feed a mixed seed, sunflower hearts, black nyger seed, peanuts, meal worms and fat balls at this time of year. The cold weather seems to have tipped the birds taste in favour of the meal worms and sunflower hearts at the moment causing us to have to refill these daily.
We were also very pleased to see the return of a Great Spotted Woodpecker to our peanut feeder this morning too. Coincidentally it was only a couple of days ago we were discussing the fact we hadn’t seen him in a while. We’re obviously not his favourite food source and he only visits us when times are hard! We are very pleased to see him anyway.
The ground is starting to thaw this evening filling Smithy Brook to the brim with very fast flowing water as it drains from the surrounding hills. Hopefully we will escape any flooding and life will start to return to more normal for the local wildlife as things warm up a little.
Spring will soon be here.
